Abstract

Background: The prevalence of oral disease and the severity increases with greater age. Its presence can have a major impact on quality of life of the elderly. The objective of the study was to investigate the current status of oral diseases and determine the factors related to oral diseases in elderly in 7 communes in region B Dai Loc, Quang Nam in 2020. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study of 560 people aged 60 and older from April 2020 to December 2020. Clinical examination of the oral cavity and interview with the elderly using to a set of questions to identify related factors: age group, economic condition, educational level, oral hygiene and periodical examination. Results: overall prevalence of oral disease was 92%. In which, the SMT index was 4.38. Gingivitis accounted for 46.3%, tartar 63.4%, plaque was present in 203 people (36.3%). Regarding the CPITN: CPI 0 was 40.0%, CPI 2 was 44.3%, CPI 3 was 2.9% and CPI 4 was 1.1%. The factors related to oral disease were: high age group, educational level, economic conditions, oral hygiene habits and periodic dental examination. Conclusion: The prevalence of oral disease among the elderly in region B Dai Loc Quang Nam is still very high. It is necessary to strengthen and expand the means of communication, education as well as providing care and treatment services for oral diseases to improve the health and well-being of the elderly.
