Abstract
Background: Primary insomnia is a prevalent medical condition that severely impairs quality of life, whereas conventional sedative-hypnotics pose significant risks of adverse effects with prolonged use.
Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy in improving sleep quality and the safety profile of Passiflora incarnata L. capsules in patients with primary insomnia.
Materials and Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted on 60 patients (n=30 per group). The intervention group received three Passiflora incarnata L. capsules daily, while the control group received two Rotundin capsules daily. PSQI scores and subjective sleep parameters were assessed at 2 and 4 weeks post-treatment.
Results: Passiflora incarnata L. capsules significantly improved PSQI scores by 38.88% at 2 weeks (p > 0.05) and 49.8% at 4 weeks (p < 0.01). Total sleep time increased by 1.9 and 2.44 hours, while sleep latency decreased by 36 and 56 minutes at 2 and 4 weeks, respectively (p > 0.05). No adverse effects were observed.
Conclusion: Passiflora incarnata L. capsules are effective and safe for improving sleep quality, increasing total sleep duration, and reducing sleep onset latency.
