Abstract

Background: Dental erosion is the loss of hard tooth tissue caused by chemical mechanism. Early detection of dental erosion in young people and identification of associated risk factors are important issues.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of dental erosion and its relationship with some habits in dental students at University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue University.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 170 students. Students completed questionnaires on oral hygiene and dietary habits; then were examined to determine the degree of dental erosion according to the BEWE index.
Results: The proportion of students with dental erosion is 47.6%; of which, level 1 dental erosion is 41.2%, level 2 dental erosion is 6.4%, and there is no level 3 dental erosion. The lower posterior teeth had the highest rate of dental erosion (53.1% - 54.3%). There is a relationship between the habit of using carbonated soft drinks and dental erosion (p < 0.05).
Conclusions: Dental erosion was a common problem among dental students. It is necessary to implement prevention and counseling programs on dental erosion.
