Abstract

Objective: To analyze treatment cost of road traffic accident in victims with surgical interventions at Danang hospital on perspective of payers and to identify some factors affecting out of pocket cost of victims and their households. Materials and Method: This is a cross sectional and descriptive study. 193 victims or their relatives were interviewed directly and medical records and invoices were reviewed to collect data of their treatment costs at hospital. Multivariate linear regression model was used to identify factors affecting out of pocket cost of participants. Results: Economic total cost of road traffic accident victims who suffered surgical intervention at Danang Hospital was 28,475 thousand VND, in which medical direct cost, non-medical direct cost and indirect cost were accounting for 69.8%, 13.6% and 16.6%, respectively. Cost for surgery, medication and hospital bed accounted for the highest proportions of medical direct cost with 33.3%; 25.5% and 18%, respectively. Out-of pocket average total cost was 9,154 thousand VND. Factors influenced their out of pocket cost including participating in health insurance (B= -9,865,109; 95% CI: -12,960,181 - -6,770,038), number of inpatient days (B= 882,125; 95% CI: 780,081- 984,169) and being students (B= 4,081,835; 95% CI: 883,645- 7,280,025). Conclusion: Treatment cost for road traffic accident victims with surgery is economic burden to them and their household.
