Abstract

Background: Osteoarthritis, belongs to the scope of “Bi Zheng”, and is the most common musculoskele- tal disease in the clinic. Patients often describe the intensity of pain in the joints that increases with changes in weather. However, there are no studies in Vietnam to provide evidence about the extent of this issue. The aim of this study is to determine the corelation between weather conditions and pain intensity based on the VAS scale and pain properties according to the patterns of traditional medicine. Materials and methods : Observational and prospective studies - with 40 patients diagnosed with degeneration of the cervical spine, lumbar spine and knee osteoarthritis at An Hoa medical ward, Hue city from 10/2020 to 03/2021. Inter - views were conducted with prepared questionnaires. Relationship with the Pearson correlation coefficient, multivariate regression and Two-way Anova. Results: The analysis indicated that there was a correlation between pain and temperature (r=-0.360, p<0.05), humidity (r = 0.508, p<0.05). Pressure has not shown to influence pain (r=-0.047, p>0.05). A significant interaction effect was found between humidity on joint pain (R=0.538, β=43.4%, p<0.05). Among different traditional medicine patterns, the effect of temperature and humidity on pain was not different (p>0.05). Conclusion: Variations in daily temperature and humidity indicate an influential relationship with joint pain and there was no difference on influence of the patterns according to Bi Zheng. Pressure did not indicate an effect on pain on the patient.
