Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background/Objectives: Understanding the roles of p53 and Bcl-2 in breast cancer carries significant clinical implications, as these markers may serve as valuable prognostic indicators for therapeutic management. Objectives: 1/To characterize the immunohistochemical expression patterns of p53 and Bcl-2 in breast adenocarcinoma. 2/ To investigate the correlation between the expression of these markers and molecular subtypes of breast adenocarcinoma.
Methods: This study was conducted on tissue specimens from 63 invasive breast cancer patients who underwent examination and treatment at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital between November 2024 and April 2026. Breast cancer tissue samples were subjected to immunohistochemical staining for molecular subtyping using four markers (ER, PR, HER2, and Ki-67), in addition to the evaluation of p53 and Bcl2 expression.
Results: The positivity rates for p53 and Bcl-2 were 31.7% and 53.8%, respectively. The most prevalent combined phenotype was p53(-)/Bcl-2(+) (38.5%). Regarding molecular subtypes, the Luminal B subtype predominated (46.0%), followed by Luminal A (25.4%), HER2-enriched (19.0%), and Triple-negative (9.5%). The p53(-)
/Bcl-2(+) phenotype was most frequent in the Luminal A (71.4%) and Triple-negative (60.0%) subtypes. Conversely, the p53(+)/Bcl-2(-) phenotype reached its highest concentration in the HER2-enriched group (54.5%).
Conclusions: p53 overexpression and loss of Bcl-2 expression are associated with poor-prognosis molecular subtypes (HER2-enriched), whereas p53 negativity and Bcl-2 expression are primarily concentrated in favorable-prognosis subtypes (Luminal A).
