Assessment of breastfeeding practice and some related factors of postpartum mothers at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital

Abstract

Background: Breastfeeding during the hospital stay immediately after birth brings many benefits to both mothers and infants. However, the current prevalence of breastfeeding is still low due to various reasons. Objectives: To describe breastfeeding practice of postpartum mothers at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and to identify some factors related to breastfeeding practice. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried on 405 postpartum mothers at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, from December 2022 to March 2023. Results: 40.9% of mothers had good breastfeeding practice during their postpartum hospital stay. There were significant relationships between breastfeeding practice and the mode of delivery (p<0.05), the attitudes and knowledge of breastfeeding (p<0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of good breastfeeding practice of mothers is still low. The hospital and related departments need to strengthen communication activities to increase the knowledge, attitude and practice of breastfeeding
