Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common chronic disease that requires patient education for effective self-management. Discharge health education, mainly delivered by nurses, is essential but still limited in practice. Objectives: (1) To assess diabetic patients’ feedback on the quality of nurse-led discharge health education before discharge; (2) To identify associated factors. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional analytic study was conducted on 110 inpatients with DM at the Internal Medicine Department, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. The Quality of Discharge Teaching Scale (QDTS) was used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and multivariate linear regression (p < 0.05). Results: The mean QDTS score was 7.91 ± 0.38. Perceived necessary content was higher than the content actually received. Three factors significantly associated with higher QDTS scores were gender, receiving education from doctors, and from nurses. Other factors (comorbidities, family history, HbA1c) showed initial correlation but lost significance in multivariate analysis. Conclusion: Patients rated DHE quality at a moderate level, though unmet information needs remain. Gender and provider role were key associated factors. Enhancing communication skills and customizing DHE content are crucial to improve post-discharge care.
