Abstract

Introduction: At Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue University, the Practice of Medicine (POM) module is designed based on competency-based education to better prepare students for clinical practice through standardized patients and simulation models.
Objective: To evaluate the satisfaction of second- and third-year medical students with standardized patient-based practice in the POM module and to propose improvements to the program.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from July to September 2024 among second- and third-year medical students who had completed the POM module. The minimum required sample size was 288; a total of 318 students were included in the final analysis. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire adapted from previous studies, with high reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.956), including 5-point Likert-scale items and an open-ended question. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26 with descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests (p < 0.05), and thematic analysis for qualitative data.
Results: A total of 318 students participated, mostly second-year (63.8%) and female (54.1%). More than 75% of students agreed or strongly agreed that standardized patients improved clinical practice, understanding of scenarios, realism, and confidence. Overall satisfaction was high, with 62.6% satisfied and 23.3% very satisfied, while dissatisfaction was below 2%. No significant differences were found by academic year (p = 0.220) or gender (p = 0.316). A small proportion (9.75%) suggested improvements, mainly increasing the number and diversity of standardized patients and enhancing their training.
Conclusion: Students highly valued the realism, clarity of clinical scenarios, and feedback provided by standardized patients. Suggested improvements include increasing the number of standardized patients, extending practice time, and diversifying clinical scenarios.
