Abstract
Background: Totally Extraperitoneal (TEP) hernia repair is the method of choice for many surgeons in treating inguinal hernias. While there have been many studies by domestic and foreign authors interested in recurrence, the problem of chronic pain after surgery has not received much attention, especially in domestic studies. This study evaluated the treatment outcome and chronic pain after laparoscopic extraperitoneal surgery for an inguinal hernia. Methods: Including 113 male patients with 131 inguinal hernias scheduled for totally extraperitoneal inguinal hernia repair at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and Hue Central Hospital from June 2019 to May 2021. Results: The average age was 56.6 ± 16.7 years old. There was 15.1% chronic pain after surgery, mostly scrotum/testicular pain, with the mean sf-IPQ score of 2.4 ± 1.3. There was a statistically significant difference in operative time between the 2 groups of patients with and without chronic pain after surgery. The incidence of recurrent hernia was 2.2% at 3 months after surgery. Conclusions: Totally Extraperitoneal repair in treating inguinal hernia is a safe indication with low rates of chronic pain and postoperative recurrencePublished | 2024-09-25 | |
