Abstract
Objectives: the study aimed to investigate the antibiotic resistance profile and to determine the prevalence of carbapenem resistance genes in Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated from the patients hospitalized in Hue Central Hospital and Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Methods: traditional microbiological methods were used for bacterial identification, antibiotic susceptible testing and phenotypic method for detection of extended spectrum beta-lactamases on 145 Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated from the clinical samples. Multiplex PCR was used for detection of blaVIM and blaIMP genes. Results: Klebsiella pneumoniae strains showed high rates of resistance to several antibiotics such as cefuroxime (54.2%), ceftriaxone (74.5%), cefepime (66.5%), meropenem (53.7%), ertapenem (57.9%) and ciprofloxacin (78.8%). The rate of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates with multidrug resistance (MDR) was 65.5% and resistant rate to 5 or more antibiotics was found at 63.4% of bacterial isolates. The rate of ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae was 42.8%, ESBL-producing strains showed a higher rate of antibiotic resistance than non-ESBL-producing strains. The prevalence of blaVIM and blaIMP genes of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates was 22.1% and 11.7%, respectively, of which 6 strains (4.1%) carried both genes. Conclusions: Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were highly resistant to several antibiotics, the rate of MDR was 65.5%, the rate of ESBL enzyme production was 42.8%. The prevalence of blaVIM and blaIMP genes was 22.1% and 11.7% respectively.Published | 2024-12-25 | |
