Abstract

Background: Poor sleep quality is an important public health problem that affects the elderly due to its high prevalence and its association with psychological, physical and mental health, affecting quality of life. It also significantly increases the risk of morbidity and mortality. However, in Nam Dong district, Thua Thien Hue province, research on sleep quality is an unpopular issue and rarely mentioned, especially among elderly living in mountainous areas. Objectives: (1) To describe the sleep quality among the Co Tu elderly in Nam Dong district, Thua Thien Hue province. (2) To find out the factors related to the sleep quality of the study subjects Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with a total sample of 130 elderly Co Tu ethnic people in Nam Dong district, Thua Thien Hue province. Data were collected using a pre-designed questionnaire. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Chi-square test with 95% CI and mutliple logistic regression was implemented to examine factors related to poor sleep quality. Results: The rate of poor sleep quality accounted for 72.9%. Factors associated with poor sleep quality in the elderly include: education level, current income, marital status, quality of life, level of health satisfaction. Conclusion: Poor sleep quality is a common problem in the elderly, it is a public health problem that needs attention to improve quality of life.
